Israel is such an amazing place. Where else in the world does an entire country stop (literally) for a total of 5 minutes spread out over a week and three different occasions?

Of course, I'm referring to the 2 minutes of silence for Holocaust Victims which we remembered this morning at 10am and then the one minute of silence next monday night at 7pm for our fallen soldiers and then once again for 2 minutes the following morning (tuesday) at 11am.

Even in the US they dont have the entire city of NY come to a standstill on September 11th. This is something so special because it is something all Jews can identify with. It doesn't matter who you are (a taxi driver, garbage collector, merchant in Machane Yehuda or even a construction worker) or where you are (see photos) you stand still and observe this silence.

When I was in the army 12 years ago, I was on leave in Machane Yehuda and was amazed how everyone turned into a statue the moment that siren started to wail. The place didn't look as crowded as usual because of the fact that you could see thru the gaps of statue-like people and just see more people with solemn looks on their faces.

This morning, I left for work late, because I wanted to stop off and see J-cop Jr. I spent about 30 minutes with him, and then I headed off to work.

At 9:58, I was still on the Jerusalem-T.A. highway and decided to pull over to the side in order to be outside during the siren. Every few seconds, another car would stop and the driver (plus any other occupants) would get out and stand on the side by his/her car.



I saw religious people, non-religious people, people in taxis, people in cars with hi-tech logos on the bumper all get out and share those two minutes in silence for 6,000,000 of our bretheren who were slaughtered by our enemies in Europe.

No cars went by and the usually-busy highway was empty of any cars or trucks.

When the siren ended, I quickly snapped these two pics.




What's interesting (and sad actually)is that as soon as those two minutes are up, everything goes back to the way it was beforehand. Within a minute I was stuck in traffic and then I saw an accident (I decided not to show pics of the guy on the motorcycle sprawled out on the ground), assumedly caused by lack of patience on someone's part.

As the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm glad that lots of you enjoyed your Pessach vacation doing various things.

I unfortunately only was able to see J-cop Jr. twice during Chol Hamoed. It was a very uncomfortable feeling having to watch him under the hawk eye's of My STBex (Soon to be ex) and her mother. Try playing with a kid, especially your own while you have two wardens watching every move you make because they are paranoid that you are going to try and flee.

Both visits were relatively short due to the uncomfortable-ness of the situation, but I hope that once a formal schedule is set up and once I'm able to take him out (without causing a ruckus) things will be different. At least thats what my lawyer keeps assuring me.

Besides those situations, I tried to enjoy Pessach as much as I could this year. A friend lent me the keys to their apt and I spent most of Chol Hamoed, catching up on movies I had missed over the years and speaking to friends I hadn't spoken to in a long while.

Most of the movies were nothing to write home about, but there are two exceptions:

1) Sideways - The story of two buddies that decide to spend one last week touring the California Wine Country before one of them gets married.

I really felt for the characters in this movie and JG if you are reading, I say that it was better than all 4 of the other Best Pic Oscar noms last year (Million Dollar Baby, Ray, The Aviator and Finding Neverland). The movie really made you feel like you can know these kinda people, they are ordinary people not a singer, not a movie director/corporate millionaire, not a writer of a children's book from the 1800's and not a female boxer, just ordinary people living their lives.

2) Gettysburg - I have wanted to see this 4 plus hour movie for more than 10 years, but had so much trouble finding a copy. It came out on DVD last year, so I finally got my hands on a copy and really enjoyed it. I wish I coulda seen this on the big screen though. (Cant have everything).

The makers of this movie really did a wonderful job of depicting the battle and also makes you understand the motivation of soldiers (officers and regular soldiers) and try to understand what people felt about slavery and fighting for what they believe. i tried reading the novel that the movie is based on "The killer Angels" years ago and couldn't get into it. maybe it's time to try again.

I guess you can say that an epic movie about the greatest battle in the US Civil War is appropriate to watch during Pessach, the Holiday of Freedom.

After having read both Jack's and Mirty's thoughts on pessach, I have come to some conclusions of my own on the true meaning of pessach and freedom.

I think that's the whole point of pessach is that we must try and figure out what it means to be slaves in order to really appreciate freedom. I actually can finally relate (somewhat) after 32 years of celebrating pessach. Since I'm currently in the process of getting divorced, many friends and family have joked with me that now I can truly feel the meaning of the holiday, going from slavery to freedom.

The truth is actually very close to that. I have felt a freedom that I haven't known for years, but the 600,000 men (plus the millions of women and children who left) had each other during this journey. I have only myself, eventhough I have wonderful support from friends and family. I still feel alone, not lonely, but alone. I have littke desire to be in large company, basically because I feel at this point in my life, that I can only truly trust myself (and my lawyer) to know what's right and whats wrong.

I know that in time I will get over these somewhat anti-social feelings, but I guess after having been burned, it takes a while for the healing process to be complete.

Study: Jesus may have walked on ice, not water, on the Sea of Galilee

The New Testament says that Jesus walked on water, but a Florida university professor believes there could be a less miraculous explanation - he walked on a floating piece of ice.

Professor Doron Nof also theorized in the early 1990s that Moses's parting of the Red Sea had solid science behind it.

Nof, a professor of oceanography at Florida State University, said on Tuesday that his study found an unusual combination of water and atmospheric conditions in what is now northern Israel could have led to ice formation on the Sea of Galilee.

Nof used records of the Mediterranean Sea's surface temperatures and statistical models to examine the dynamics of the Sea of Galilee, which Israelis know now as Lake Kinneret.

The study found that a period of cooler temperatures in the area between 1,500 and 2,600 years ago could have included the decades in which Jesus lived.

A drop in temperature below freezing could have caused ice thick enough to support a human to form on the surface of the freshwater lake near the western shore, Nof said. It might have been nearly impossible for distant observers to see a piece of floating ice surrounded by water.

Nof said he offered his study - published in the April edition of the Journal of Paleolimnology - as a "possible explanation" for Jesus' walk on water.

"If you ask me if I believe someone walked on water, no, I don't," Nof said. "Maybe somebody walked on the ice, I don't know. I believe that something natural was there that explains it."

"We leave to others the question of whether or not our research explains the biblical account."

When he offered his theory 14 years ago that wind and sea conditions could explain the parting of the Red Sea, Nof said he received some hate mail, even though he noted that the idea could support the biblical description of the event.

And as his theory of Jesus' walk on ice began to circulate, he had more hate mail in his e-mail inbox.

"They asked me if I'm going to try next to explain the resurrection," he said.
